ALHOSN University’s Departments of Education and Architecture Engineering co-organized a lecture by Dr. Abdul Rahman Makhlouf, former director of the Department of City Planning and Director of the Arab Office of Planning and Architecture, entitled “Sheikh Zayed and the Urban Development of Abu Dhabi” on February 28, 2011. The activity was held in the presence of H.E. Prof. Abdul Rahim Sabouni, Vice Chancellor and CEO of ALHOSN University, Provost Dr. Hamdi Sheibani, and a number of department heads, faculty members and students. The lecture provided insights on the personality of Sheikh Zayed (may God have mercy on him), and his vision in the planning of the city of Abu Dhabi. It also reviewed the urban development experienced by the city over the past half century.
The event began with a an introduction by Dr. Mohamed Saeed Hasab El Naby, Chair of the Education Department, who expressed pleasure at receiving Dr. Makhlouf in an initiative by H.E. Prof. Sabouni whom he revealed as a long-time friend of the speaker. The Vice Chancellor made daily follow ups leading to the lecture. Dr. El Naby also commended the collaboration with the Department of Architecture Engineering, explaining that the lecture was a successful fruit of the partnership. He stated his belief in the need to bridge the gaps between knowledge and the various sciences.
Dr. Mohammed Al Kashef, Chair of the Architecture Engineering Department, emphasized the social message imparted by urban planning. He also paid respect to Dr. Makhlouf, as he graduated under the supervision and guidance of Dr. Makhlouf’s own students. Dr. Al Kashef said that the lecture adds value to his students as it reveals the history of the development of urban planning in the city of Abu Dhabi.
The event was concluded by the presentation of the University Shield and a certificate of appreciation from the departments of Education and Architecture Engineering to Dr. Makhlouf, who was recognized for his valuable works and his life-long involvement in the planning and reconstruction of cities.
Dr. Abdul Rahman Makhlouf is regarded as a pioneering contributor to the development of the cities of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. He also assisted in the urban development of other Arab cities such as Mecca and Medina.
