Prof. Abdul Rahim Sabouni, Vice Chancellor & CEO of ALHOSN University, recently delivered a lecture on ‘The Controversy of Profitability in Higher Education’ at the Abu Dhabi Branch of Sheikh Sultan Bin Zayed’s Cultural & Media Centre.
At the beginning of the lecture, Prof. Sabouni presented some facts about the privatization of education in the UAE. He noted that currently there are over 70 accredited private universities and colleges in the UAE. He further classified these higher education institutions into various categories and explained the difference between negative and positive profitability.
Prof. Sabouni explained that private universities have a pivotal role to play in the national economy, but that there is a perceived mismatch between higher education and profitability. He added that customer satisfaction was important in maintaining competitiveness and a good brand name for private universities, and proceeded to outline the advantages and disadvantages of institutions of higher education in the private sector.
At the end of his lecture, Prof. Sabouni gave some recommendations on how private universities can play a more effective role in supporting the efforts of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the UAE, particularly towards enhanced community service and economic development.
