The Civil Engineering Department at ALHOSN University, in collaboration with the Arabian Construction Company (ACC), organized a field trip for students to the Emirates Region Pearl Hotel construction site on March 11, 2012. The students were accompanied by Dr. George Markou and Teaching Assistant Eng. Ahmed Mousa, both faculty members at the Department of Civil Engineering.
As part of The Atlas Group, the Regent Emirates Pearl Hotel in Abu Dhabi is a joint venture with Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC) valued at an estimated Dhs 870 million. This hotel was designed by the internationally known architect Dennis Lems from Austria. It is located on the Abu-Dhabi Corniche, next to the Etihad Towers. The area of the plot is 10,000 m2
and the frame’s total height according to the design will be 240 m. The hotel’s basements, the 377 hotel rooms and 60 residential apartments will cover a total of 130,000 m2
The students from ALHOSN were greeted by Project Manager Mr. Maged Rofail, Project Quality Manager Mr. Majid Shirian, HSE Manager Mr. Raymond Fung, QS department engineer Mr. Raul Parian and the ACC’s Training Department Manager Mr. Hassan Yassine. The field trip consisted of a tour of the worksite and a conference-type presentation and discussion related to quality, safety and planning procedures that have been incorporated in this large scale construction project.
The worksite tour included a 15-minutes safety seminar (safety equipment distribution) and a visit to the top floor of the project, which is located more than 200m above the sea level. During this tour the construction procedure of the reinforced concrete frame was explained and the different structural parts of the project were analyzed by site engineers. Furthermore, the finishing engineer of the site described the different stages followed during construction and analyzed the different finishing works currently being performed in this project.
After the completion of the worksite tour, the students were able to attend three different presentations that were given by the corresponding head engineers of the quality, safety and planning departments of the project.
