The American Corner in Abu Dhabi (ACAD) hosted its 4th
Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign on 3 November 2015. In his opening remarks, ACAD Director, Dr. Adnan Husnéin, welcomed all guests including a delegation from the US Embassy headed by Ali Lejlic, Counselor for Press and Cultural Affairs, and acknowledged students from New York University who were also in attendance.
Dr. Husnéin briefed the audience on the Corner’s active collaboration in recent years, with organizations, individuals and public bodies to raise funds totaling AED 28,000. This year’s proceeds from the bazaar and the sales of magnetic ribbons will once again benefit the Pink Caravan; a pan-UAE breast cancer awareness initiative courtesy of the Friends of Cancer Patients charitable organization. He hoped that “this event will help in speaking out to the conscience of our society so that every person join hands, and help, save and improve the lives of thousands of women around the world.”
Later, Provost Dr. Mohammad Kashef reminisced about his first encounter with the Pink Ribbon campaign, and the important role campuses around the world play in raising awareness about the deadly decease. Ali Lejlic, from the US embassy, also praised the Corner’s active involvement in promoting the well-being of the community through socially responsible initiatives such as Earth Day, the Alzheimer’s awareness campaign, Breast Cancer Awareness, and the Eid-ul-Adha bazaar and banquet, and in particular student-centered activities such as the recent student design competition to renovate the Corner. He also highlighted the significant role of the American Corner in furthering the partnership between the US Embassy and ALHOSN University.
The event’s main guest speaker was Dr. Fanan Al Aani, from Pink Caravan. She gave a presentation on the importance of educating the public about preventative measures and early detection to reduce the risk of breast cancer, and to allow for successful treatment. The presentation included a video clip highlighting the services provided by the Pink Caravan.
This first segment of the event program concluded with a presentation of a token of appreciation to Dr. Fanan Al Aan, followed by a luncheon. The program resumed after a brief intermission to celebrate Flag Day. It included a lively Zumba session and a fun walk around campus courtesy of the Sports Club and Aduba fitness center. More than 100 female students participated in the various activities which many have felt it was an amazing experience. This quote from one of our student guests says it all: “It was quite a different event. The health talk […] described the symptoms and prevention. It was something that had been missing in the other breast cancer awareness programs I have attended. An afternoon well spent I must say.”
Thank you everyone for making this one of the best campaigns at ALHOSN!
