ALHSON University hosts Salama® Road Safety Initiative session in the presence of Formula 3 driver Basil Shaaban

Students experience safe driving skills and techniques to encourage
a drop in Abu Dhabi road accidents

ALHOSN University, a leading Abu Dhabi-based university dedicated to high-quality, value-based education, has  hosted on Sunday, November 15, 2009 a major student session on road safety with Formula 3 driver and UN Road Safety Youth Ambassador Basil Shaaban organized by  Salama® - For Road Safety Public Awareness, an  initiative of the Emirates Foundation for Philanthropy.

Salama is supported by Shell, the Emirates Driving Company, and the UAE Ministry of Interior.

The event was held at the university’s campus, where Shaaban participated an interactive session promoting safe driving in the UAE, while sharing with students the tangible reasons that will help understand the importance of road safety law enforcement.

Basil commented: “Driving is my passion, so is promoting road safety. I take this as a real responsibility, particularly as I was brought up in the UAE and I feel it is my duty to help raise the awareness of youth about the dangers of the roads."

Salama demonstrated the use of the “seat belt convincer” --a device that shows the essential safety benefit of using seatbelts to secure vehicle occupants. The device simulates an abrupt stop at between 8 and 12 km/h. This marked yet another occasion for the Salama initiative to use simulators to convince drivers – they made a major impression during the recent F1 FANZONE™ ROAD SAFETY display on the Abu Dhabi Corniche.

ALHOSN students also attended a session where they learned practical facts about the traffic situation in the UAE. The lecturers emphasized the importance of responsible driving in preventing road-related injuries and deaths.

Mahasen Al Mahasneh, Students Activities Coordinators, ALHOSN University, said: “The young are often unaware of the terrible consequences of reckless driving. Our partnership with Salama enables us to take part in the education of tomorrow’s drivers and help prevent road accidents. Our students were genuinely concerned about the effects of irresponsible driving and the simple safety measures and driving attitudes they could adopt.”

“We assure Salama of our full support in its awareness programs and will constantly remind our students of the importance of road safety,” she added.

Al Hosn students recently watched Salama’s public service TV announcement as well as an emotional testimonial by a young Emirati , breaking silence and talking about the car crash of a loved one and how this had affected him.

Maytha Al Habsi, Director of Communications and Public Awareness at the Emirates Foundation for Philanthropy, summed up: “We believe that direct interaction with the young in universities is essential. Such tangible ways are of tremendous help in convincing drivers, especially the younger ones, to change their behavior.”
