The Sports Club at ALHOSN University hosted its first Sports Day on Monday November 25, 2013. The event aimed at challenging students, staff and the community at large to adopt an active lifestyle. It engaged the public through various sports activities which catered for beginners and enthusiasts alike. The event kicked off with two seminars presented by Universal and Burjeel Hospitals. American Board Certified Dr. Jeoseph Quattrone, from Universal Hospital, led a podiatry seminar and addressed issues related to sports injuries and care; while Dr. Anita Das Gupta, Clinical Dietician and Nutritionist at Burjeel Hospital, focused on nutrition and dietary habits. The podiatry seminar was co-organized by the American Corner of Abu Dhabi City.
The main Sports Day event was, subsequently, held at Sheikh Sultan Bin Zayed Stadium near ALHOSN Campus. Scores of community members flocked around informational booths that represented several fitness clubs and health providers. Registration stations helped around 160 participants sign up for featured activities including an entertaining “laughing yoga” presented by Burjeel Hospital, followed by body attack and body jam sessions courtesy of Gold’s Gym. There were also fun games prepared by the Get Moving Spa and Fitness Center; meanwhile, participants got to mix fun with competitive spirit in tourneys organized for basketball, ping pong, and football.
Several volunteer faculty and students helped with the planning of the main event. Faculty members, such as Mr Ahmad Dhiaeldeen organized the football tourney, and Ms Nessrin Shayya refereed basketball games. Volunteer Students included Mohammad Khan, Shamsa Al Mansoori, Qusai Jalbout, Mahmoud Ismael and Lutfa Nurul Alam Akhter.
Moreover, the Universal Hospital team conducted free medical check-ups for the public, including Body Mass Index (BMI), blood sugar level and pulse rate screening, while the Burjeel Hospital experts offered free advice on nutrition and dietetics. “Gold’s Gym” also contributed by offering special promotional discounts and handing out “One-day-free-VIP trial passes”. “Get Moving Spa and Fitness Center” offered free one-month membership passes and prizes for winners in the fun games.
The day concluded with a presentation of medals to winning individuals and teams. Tokens of appreciation were also given to participating clubs and institutions. Mrs. Haifa Kattan, Sports Club advisor, presided over the closing ceremony. She was joined on stage by Vice Chancellor Munther Momany, whose presence and active participation lent much needed support. “Sports Day has been a terrific and well organized event, a big success by all measures. This was, indeed, a day full of fun learning activities and excitement!” commented Prof. Momany who participated in workout sessions and competed in other games. Mrs. Kattan also acknowledged her team members, Mr. Ahmed Dhiaeldeen, Ms. Huda Kindi, Mrs. Rania Akkad, and Dr. Adnan Husnéin, for their outstanding contributions.
Finally, a raffle draw took place with a chance to win a total of ten AED 100 vouchers presented by SportsOne.
