The American Corner of Abu Dhabi (ACAD) in cooperation with the ALHOSN Sports Club, organized an Eid Al-Adha Charity Bazaar and Banquet for Friends of Cancer Patients. The two events marked the end of ACAD’s second fundraising campaign for cancer.
The U.S. Embassy’s Deputy Chief of Mission, Victor Hurtado, was the honorary guest at the Eid-Al Adha banquet on Wednesday, October 24th. Prof. Abdul Rahim Sabouni, Vice Chancellor and CEO, welcomed the guests in his opening remarks and emphasized ALHOSN University’s active involvement in promoting the well-being of the community through socially responsible initiatives.
“In the past two years, the American Corner has been successful in organizing various noteworthy events such as the Breast Cancer Week of 2011 and Earth Day of 2012, representing the USA in Small World 2012, and initiated Abu Dhabi’s first Volunteer Fair. This event is yet another milestone achieved in the growth of the American Corner,” the Vice Chancellor stated.
The U.S. Embassy’s Deputy Chief of Mission, Victor Hurtado, described the need to focus attention on health issues, particularly cancer, to help raise awareness. He lauded the Sports Club and American Corner of Abu Dhabi City for their efforts to establish ties with the surrounding community.
Dr. Jalaa Taher, Section Head at the Cancer Control and Prevention Section from the Health Authority of Abu Dhabi, spoke about the importance of educating the public about preventative measures and early detection to reduce the risk of cancer and to allow for successful treatment. She introduced Ms. Gresya, a cancer survivor, who shared her inspiring story of overcoming the odds and beating breast cancer. Ms. Lamya Garb from the First Gulf Bank highlighted their plan to help protect women from an impending financial risk resulting from expensive cancer treatment. First Gulf Bank’s affordable "Well Women Plan" involves a small monthly payment to provide coverage for women should they suffer from common female-specific cancers.
The official winner of the Best Arabic Sweets Contest from the previous day’s Charity Bazaar was announced. The winner, ALHOSN student Noha Hatem received two free tickets to the banquet and was awarded a crystal plaque.
A total of 13,010 AED in donations to the Friends of Cancer Patients was garnered from generous contributions made by ALHOSN students and staff as well as the Abu Dhabi community throughout the month of October. All proceeds from bazaar table sales, banquet tickets, and community donations will be gifted to Friends of Cancer Patients during the American Corner’s “People of the World” event scheduled for November 20th on the ALHOSN campus.
