ALHOSN University’s American Corner, a resource center for US history, culture, policy and business, recently participated in the Small World 2012 charity event held at the Emirates Palace on March 16, 2012.
Small World is an annual fundraiser that gathers people residing in the UAE from various ethnic backgrounds to support the less fortunate, especially among children. This year’s edition was held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, the UAE Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and focused on the issue of child labor. CNN, the event’s official broadcast partner, aired Small World television commercials for a whole month. Tickets and various promotional items were sold at ALHOSN University’s American Corner two weeks prior to the event.
The Small World event featured music, dance, food and games designed to help spectators learn more about a variety of countries from around the world. ALHOSN’s USA Team leaders Ms. Huda Kindi, Ms. Rekha Pillai, and Ms. Amanda Tinnin chose Mr. Ahmed Al Suwaidi as their Small World USA Ambassador.
The event commenced with a flag parade led by the representatives of each country. The United States of America was led by Mr. Ahmed Al Suwaidi and Divya Tennant. The USA performance involved the creation of a cappella choral group composed of six students, Mahgoub Hussein, Adnan Talal Mayassi, Rayan Osman, Dana Al Zaeem, and Esra Al Samani, and three faculty members, Dr. Adnan Husnein, Ms. Rekha Pillai, and Ms. Amanda Tinnin. In addition, two ALHOSN students, Muayad Hamouda and Jameel Khabaze, performed a hip-hop dance along with four members of a local dance group. The music for the dancers was mixed by Abdulaziz El Jechi.
The USA stand had chosen the theme of freedom from slavery. Students and faculty entertained visitors with some Southwest and Northeast American delicacies, a unique opportunity to take pictures with some of Disney’s most famous characters and a visual display of some breathtaking US landscapes.
On Monday, March 21, 2012 at the American Corner on ALHOSN’s campus, the official handing over of ticket sales worth Dhs. 21,100 to the Small World representatives brought the curtains down on this noble event.
