In his remarks, Ambassador Corbin highlighted the ongoing importance of the American Corner to the partnership between the U.S. Embassy and ALHOSN University and the importance of the Thanksgiving holiday in American culture.
He subsequently recognized the American Corner’s commitment to be a cultural hub for the community and the upcoming plan to educate ALHOSN University students and personnel about the cultures and traditions of various countries through “ACAD Celebrates People of the World.” The occasion marks the Ambassador’s second visit to the university with the first being his visit for the Breast Cancer Awareness Week organized by the American Corner in October, 2011.
During the coming months, “ACAD Celebrates People of the World” will focus on a different country each month, to celebrate, learn about, and reflect upon the unique contributions and achievements of that nation. The activities for the country spotlighted will include performances, art displays, movies, competitions, cooking classes and cuisine. Each event will provide entertainment as well as an educational experience for the ALHOSN community. Related embassies will be invited to participate along with selected faculty and students.
During the Ambassador’s visit, all attendees were invited to a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Proceeds from meal tickets were donated to Operation Smile UAE. Ms. Morag Cromey-Hawk, Executive Director of Operation Smile, attended the event and spoke about the importance of donating to repair children's cleft lips and cleft palates to provide a life-changing surgery for a child in need.
Ambassador Corbin also toured Dr. Adnan Husnéin’s exhibit: “Evolution of Artistic Thought.” “This exhibit represents sketches, drawings, paintings, even snippets of scratched out notes and other bits of graphic work which span a couple of decades. It is about a creative process which shares my preoccupation with seeing and living—a process of developing original ideas through exploration, careful observation, and discovery. I wish to thank my students and colleagues whose inspiring encouragement and support made this endeavor possible,” says Dr. Adnan Husnéin, Assistant Professor in the Department of Urban Planning.
Before his departure the Ambassador had the opportunity to meet informally with students and encourage them to follow him on Twitter @AmbCorbin to keep in touch with his latest news.
