ALHOSN University, Abu Dhabi - Amongst the recent series of events which ALHOSN University is holding, an open lecture on Earthquakes in the Gulf Region will be presented in the University. The lecturer is Professor Muawia Barazangi, Associate Director of the Institute for the Study of the Continents (INSTOC), Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. Professor Barazangi will talk about the potential of generating small to moderate size earthquakes in the northeast area of the UAE, which is an integral part of the modestly active Oman mountain system. “Major northeast cities like Dubai and Sharjah are only about 100 km from the strongly active Zagros continental collision zone located farther to the north of Iran”. Professor Barazangi stated. Professor Barazangi has numerous publications and research papers on earthquakes and geological effects on different regions, covering parts of the Middle East, Persia and the Arabian Peninsula. The open lecture will be held in ALHOSN University’s Men’s Campus, on Wednesday April 19, 2006.
